Where the Klay Thompson-Warriors contract extension talks are reportedly at.

The Warriors have made it obvious that extending Klay Thompson's deal is one of their top objectives.

But where are those talks now that the veteran guard is under contract for another season? Ramona Shelburne of ESPN recently shared her thoughts on the "The Lowe Post" podcast.

"My understanding is that they have opened contract extension talks with Klay Thompson," Shelburne told host Zach Lowe. "This is a time-consuming process."

This notion that he's been eligible for a long time and they haven't done anything... no, they've begun to talk.

They've exchanged ideas. These debates are not rushed. Optionality works both ways.

"It's not that he's trying to leave; it's just that he didn't have a great year last year." It is in his best interests to have a successful year this year, as he will become more valuable if he does."

Thompson is in the final year of his five-year, $190 million contract and has had a difficult start to the 2022-23 NBA season.

Despite a poor playoff performance, he found his shot as the regular season progressed, suggesting he's still years away from retirement.

The Warriors will almost surely look for a deal this time around after giving Thompson a max contract as he recovered from back-to-back lower leg injuries in 2019.

While there is still time to work out a new contract – and for Thompson to prove his worth by his performance – both Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. and owner Joe Lacob expect Thompson to stay with the team.
