NFL: 49ers trade Trey Lance to Cowboys for fourth-round pick

The move is a surprising reversal after the Niners' significant commitment in Trey Lance

as a franchise quarterback; "We take full accountability," general manager John Lynch stated. "That is ours."

Less than three years after dealing three first-round picks to choose him third overall,

the San Francisco 49ers have sold quarterback Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a fourth-round pick.

Lance had earlier this week lost the fight to be Brock Purdy's backup in San Francisco to Sam Darnold, laying the situation

for his departure on Friday, just hours before the Niners' exhibition finale against the Los Angeles Chargers.

"When we told him he was going to be the three, if he could find another opportunity that was good, we'd allow him to do that, and he did,"

coach Kyle Shanahan said. "We believe he'll be better for it, and I believe we will as well."
