In a sloppy NFL season opener, the Lions stun the Super Bowl champion Chiefs.

In a muddy NFL season opening on Thursday night, the Detroit Lions defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 21-20, in the second half.

Travis Kelce's Tuesday practice bone bruise prevented him from playing, thus Patrick Mahomes missed him. The Chiefs dropped many passes in both half, and the Lions capitalized.

First, Detroit made things interesting in the fourth quarter when quarterback Jared Goff connected with Josh Reynolds for 33 yards to set up a red-zone opportunity down 20-14.

Two plays later, David Montgomery ran for his first Lions score from eight yards out, giving the team a 21-20 lead.

Detroit's offseason-improved defense made crucial stops after grabbing the lead. They forced a punt on third-and-1 against the Chiefs.

Despite head coach Dan Campbell opting for it on the next drive and not getting a first down, the defense again came up big to seal the win.
