Trey Lance seemed to be thrilled to be a new member of the Dallas Cowboys after the San Francisco 49ers traded him to their historic foe. Lance “lightened up a little bit” when he heard out he was going to Dallas, according to 49ers general manager John Lynch.
“Kyle [Shanahan] and I, when we broke the news to him today, saw him [Lance] light up a little bit, and he loves it here,” Lynch said during a press conference on August 26, 2023. “He was grateful for the opportunity.”
Trey apologized to us, even though there was nothing for him to apologize for. We’re just glad he’s got a spot, and the Cowboys came up big, which I believe shows how delighted they are to have him. And we’re thrilled for Trey’s new chance, and we’ll always be huge supporters.”
The San Francisco 49ers’ Trey Lance only started four games before joining the Cowboys.
The Cowboys have an intriguing quarterback room despite the likelihood that Will Grier will be released, with Lance and Cooper Rush perhaps competing for the backup position in the future. Given his familiarity, Rush should start the season, but Dallas gave up future draft value for a reason.
In his first two seasons in San Francisco, the newest Cowboys quarterback completed 54.9% of his passes while throwing for 797 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 3 interceptions. The quarterback’s ability to threaten with his legs is one of Lance’s most distinctive abilities; throughout the same time period, he carried for 235 yards and a touchdown.
John Lynch, 49ers GM: ‘He Needs to Play to Get Better’ on New Dallas Cowboys QB Trey Lance
The difficulty is that Lance is expected to start the season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback, the same position he held with the Niners. Lynch said that for Lance to progress, he should at least get reps in practice, implying that the quarterback would be the backup. It will be intriguing to see how the Cowboys handle the reps split between Rush and Lance.
“It’s not how everyone does it, but the No. 1 takes a lot of reps in our system,” Lynch explained. “The scout team reps are taken by the No. 2.” It’s just that there aren’t a lot of opportunities for Kyle [Shanahan] to improve, and that’s what he needs to do.
